Résumé

Montreal protocol directs a shift towards low-GWP refrigerants. As the performance of a compressor varies with refrigerant and cooling load, it is crucial to evaluate the performance of each compressor type for low-GWP refrigerants and a wide range of cooling capacities. The first step in the evaluation process is to develop a coherent methodology for scaling the compressor geometry for various refrigerants and cooling capacities. Therefore, a scaling model is developed to design and select the scroll geometry for 1-100 ton range of cooling capacity and seven refrigerants. This method is based on manufacturing constraints and minimization of leakage. The technique is used to scale the geometry for seven refrigerants including low-pressure refrigerants, R1234ZE(E) and R1234yf, medium-pressure refrigerants, R410A, R32, R454B, and R452B and high-pressure R744. The results suggest that the height of the scroll is limited by the scroll rigidity which results in huge scroll diameters for low-pressure refrigerants.
