Modélisation numérique d'un PCM intégré dans des structures périodiques.

Numerical modelling of a PCM embedded in periodic structures.

Résumé

In the last decades, to counteract the excess of greenhouse gases, the potential exploitation of renewable energy sources and innovative methods of energy recovery have been widely explored. In this scenario, PCMs based Latent Thermal Energy Storage systems (LTESs) can be considered a promising solution. Aiming at investigating the thermal performances of the LTESs, different numerical models can be retrieved in literature. These tools have been found to be rather reliable for single phase processes, but less accurate when applied to multi-phase ones. Hence, to describe the phase change phenomena, numerical simulations must be carefully validated. In this paper, starting from the experimental results collected during the melting process (i.e. solid to liquid phase change) of a paraffin wax inside 3D periodic structures, different 2D and 3D simulation approaches are investigated and discussed. The results reveal that 2D approximations of complex 3D structures can be misleading and only 3D simulations assure reliable predictions.
