Résumé

In recent years, phase change material emulsions (PCMEs) have been extensively studied as potential heat transfer fluids. In these systems, a PCM is emulsified in a heat transfer fluid such as water. The aim is to exploit the latent heat of fusion of the PCM to increase the thermal energy storage capacity of the base fluid. Moreover, emulsified or possibly encapsulated systems have the advantage of being pumped through a heat transfer circuit regardless of the state of the PCM.
In this work, 10 wt% of a commercial PCM material, RT25HC, with nominal phase change temperature at 25°C, was successfully emulsified in water. PCM droplet size and emulsion stability were studied over time. The subcooling, i.e. the crystallization process occurring at a temperature lower than the melting temperature, is a typical issue in PCME development being more pronounced in nano-confined systems. To overcome this problem, the effect of a nucleating agent on the crystallization kinetic was investigated. In particular, 1.5 wt% of a PCM melting above 25°C (RT65, melting at 65°C) was found to reduce subcooling.
The thermal conductivity, viscosity, density, and Cp of the emulsion were measured at various temperatures. A heat exchange test section was developed to investigate these emulsions. Despite the higher viscosity and lower thermal conductivity of PCMEs with respect to water, heat transfer measurements showed a higher heat transfer coefficient in PCMEs compared to water.
