Résumé

This concept is focused on developing heat pumps capable of using higher temperature heat as a heat source. Such applications are being considered as part of extending the range of operation of district heating networks and/or use with seasonal solar thermal energy storage systems. The performance of solar thermal energy storage systems declines through use during the heating season and therefore the heat pump must be used to upgrade the heat supply temperature to that required by the building’s heat distribution system. Likewise for district heating networks, such a technology can be used to extend the capacity of such a system. In terms of the heat pump challenge, a limited number of heat pumps exist that have this capability. Thus, there is a technology challenge to develop a heat pump system with improved performance and reduced costs. Secondly, such a system must integrate with both the energy supply (allowing district/stored heat to be utilised when it is sufficient to heat the building) so a robust building services evaluation and control system must be devised. This study illustrates the progress made to date with this concept including heat pump cycles meeting these demands, typical building services integration challenges and their potential economic value in terms of seasonal energy storage and district heating network extension.
