Résumé

The present article shows the results of the study about the potential of solar thermal energy to supply heating, domestic hot water and cooling in residential and tertiary sector over the Spanish buildings between 2011 and 2020. The results are shown as total square meters of solar collectors per building type and technology. Besides that, solar production, primary energy savings, CO2 savings and total investment, were calculated in the original study. The aim of this study has been to contribute to determine the strategy on the Renewable Energy Plan 2011 – 2020 of Spain regarding the solar cooling technology. The project has been supported by the public organization IDAE (www.idae.es). The main conclusion of the study is that in 2020 there will be a total maximum potential of 60 million of m2 of solar collectors (million-m2) in residential sector and 8,5 million-m2 in tertiary sector, with single-effect absorption chiller systems. The potential for double-effect absorption chillers with parabolic trough collectors and desiccant systems, in tertiary sector, is of 0,7 million-m2 and 0,2 million-m2, respectively. However, with present market conditions, most of the systems requires a subsidy of 60 % of the investment to have a pay-back lower than 15 years.
