Résumé

Most thermal comfort research relies upon subjective data traditionally collected through paper-based surveys or questionnaires. More recent techniques exploit the internet to dispatch and then encode the questionnaire. But one major drawback of web-based surveys is the ‘tethering’ of an occupant to their workstation computer at the time of the questionnaire response, thereby limiting the spatial coverage of responses. Non-desk-based contexts such as residential, transitional and outdoor zones are not feasible with these web-based survey tools. Initially developed for a longitudinal study of thermal comfort in residential settings, the mobile IEQ survey has expanded into an online multi-platform questionnaire development environment nicknamed ‘Comfort Chimp’. Questionnaires are dynamically generated using the web portal and support drop-down selection, radio buttons, checklists, sliders, and text input fields. Each survey ‘campaign’ is administered via email or SMS containing a shortened link to the online questions. Individually coded responses are logged and displayed in real time on the online control panel. An in-built metrics component allows for quick data analysis such as building ‘snapshots’. Comfort Chimp is unique as both the questionnaire and platform can be designed for the desired research application. Pilot testing has shown this to be a very effective method for evaluating ‘right-here, right-now’ thermal comfort, perceived air quality, or productivity questionnaire for geographically dispersed and mobile respondents as well as more conventional large-scale POE evaluations in commercial buildings.
