Résumé

The chemical heat pump system is one of the prospective solutions for the energy resource depletion problems. Lithium chloride (LiCl)-modified magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] is potentially a new material for use in these chemical heat pumps. In order for these materials to be put into practical use, an understanding of 1) the relationship between purity and reactivity and 2) the relationship between repetitive operation numbers and reactivity is necessary. Magnesium hydroxide with two levels of purity (99.9 and 95%) was employed in order to compare the dehydration and hydration reactivity of LiCl/Mg(OH)2 in the one-cycle dehydration and hydration operation. The dehydration reaction rate of LiCl/Mg(OH)2 (95%) was slower than that of LiCl/Mg(OH)2 (99.9%), which indicates that the impurities present in LiCl/Mg(OH)2 (95%) inhibited the dehydration reaction. The effect of repetitive operation on reactivity was examined using LiCl/Mg(OH)2 (99.9%) under a repetitive cycle of 105 dehydration and hydration operations. The mole fraction of Mg(OH)2 after the dehydration operation increased with repetitive operations. The conversion of hydration reaction (which corresponds to the heat output performance) decreased 21.4% (from 85.8 to 64.4%). Scanning electron microscopy images indicated that some of the grain was sintered after 105 runs of the cyclic operation, which may account for the decreased reactivity. The heat output capacity of LiCl/Mg(OH)2 (99.9%) during the cyclic operation was calculated from the experimental results.
