Résumé

In the present study, the characteristics of the steady state turbulent convective heat transfer are experimentally investigated for ?-Al2O3/water nanofluid used in engine cooling. The tests were performed using ?-Al2O3 nanoparticles with diameters range of (21–37) nm. The cylinder head of the engine was simulated as rectangular duct made of cast iron with aspect ratio of 0.8. The effect of nanoparticles volume concentration (0–2%), bulk temperature (60–80 °C), and flow velocity (1–2 m/s) are investigated for variable heat flux (100–400 kW/m2).
The results showed that the convective heat transfer coefficient is directly proportional with the flow velocity and inversely proportional with bulk temperature. The highest heat transfer coefficient is 78.67% which achieved at 1% volume concentration of nanoparticles compared with pure water. The ?-Al2O3 water nanofluid should be used to cool the cast iron components of the engine with limitations.
