Résumé
This paper describes a real case of energy recovery via an absorption chiller working with a mixture of water/lithium bromide. The chilled water is used for cooling rotating machines in a medium-sized printing industry. The high electrical load demand of the company, and the choice to guarantee the stability in the production of chilled water to avoid problems in case of electric power failures, has pushed the company to choose an absorption chiller unit driven by natural gas. The operating period over the year is about 300 days (24 hours process). Only for short periods the plant is switched off, to allow maintenance operations on printing presses. The installed cooling capacity of absorption chiller is 580 kW. The required cooling load is not constant and it depends on the number of active rotating machineries as well as climatic conditions. To cover peak loads during summer there are electric compression chillers to increase cooling capacity if needed. In this period part of the chilled water produced is also used for air conditioning and the heat condensation derived by the absorption chiller is discharged by the cooling tower. During heating season the overall recoverable heat is 800 kW. In this period the cooling tower is bypassed, and, through plate heat exchangers, the circuit of radiant floor is heated (about 23.000 m2). To ensure peak loads in winter due to heating and hot water, two additional boilers are installed. The paper presents first results of a measurement campaign for demonstrating the effective efficiency of the overall system.
