Résumé

Presently available commercial absorption chillers reach COPs of about 1.2. If, for power demand side reasons, cooling by direct-fired absorption chillers is promoted, it is evident that the COP and the PER (primary energy ratio) of absorption chillers must be improved. One promising way to attain this goal is to use high-temperature driving heat, as it is always available when fossil fuels are being burned. Multi-effect cycles make it possible to use these high temperatures efficiently, but the heavy corrosion problems with ordinary sorption liquids have in the past prevented the realisation of these cycles. In cascading cycles, which allow to employ different working pairs in the different cycles, the use of solid sorption systems as high-temperature topping cycles can avoid these corrosion problems. The simple connecting of the individual cycles is not sufficient to obtain a significant energy saving. All units of a cascading cycle have to be optimized for the coupling. General considerations for optimisation of cascading cycles are presented. Numerical data for a cascading triple effect system, which is being realized by a French-German cooperation, are presented.
