Résumé
Conditioning of supply air accounts for a substantial part of the heat and cold demand in buildings. Two strategies for reducing this energy are demonstrated on a retrofit project in a university building located in Zurich, Switzerland. In this building, every office has been equipped with large, ceiling-mounted panels for lowt emperature heating and high-temperature cooling. Fan coil units with heating and cooling capability locally provide supply air from the façade. Air exchange rates are CO2-controlled. The building is connected to a campus-wide earth storage system. The first strategy aims at exploiting room heat for conditioning the supply air: In the warm and intermediate seasons, the supply air often needs to be heated up although the rooms are warm enough and sometimes even need cooling later during the day. In this situation, the heat needed for air-conditioning can be extracted from the rooms via the panels. If properly designed, this strategy helps reducing energy consumption, despite the additional pump energy needed for circulating the water through the panels. The second strategy aims at collecting the supply air from the best-suited façade on sunny days - from the shadowy side in summer, and from the sunny side in winter. Fresh air is then provided to a part of the rooms indirectly, across other rooms and the corridor from the opposite side of the building. Therefore, care must be taken to still maintain good air quality for all rooms, especially for offices with closed doors. Whole-year simulations show that both strategies lead to a clear reduction of overall energy consumption and CO2 emissions if appropriately designed.
