Absorption heat pumps are traditionally closed systems, while adsorption dehumidifiers are traditionally open systems. Recently a semi-open heat pump and dehumidifier has been proposed, in which ambient atmospheric humidity is absorbed into a solution, desorbed back to vapor in a desorber, condensed to liquid in a condenser, and released back to the ambient as a liquid. In this work, a semi-open sorption heat pump water heater was evaluated under the standard 24-hour duration test procedure used to evaluate water heaters in the US, the uniform energy factor (UEF) test. The results demonstrated that a cycle COP of 1.22 was achieved at air conditions of 19.7°C (67.5°F) and 50% relative humidity. Over the 24-hour period, the heat pump ran twice, with an average heating capacity of 0.825 kW, and an average cycle heating COP of 1.22. The standard load profile withdrew 209.6 L (55.4 gallons) from a 173.8 L (45.9 gallons) storage tank. The water supplied to the tank was 14.4°C (58°F) and the water withdrawn from the tank was always hotter than 45.3°C (113.5°F).
