Résumé

HFO (hydrofluoroolefin) and HCFO (hydrochloroolefins) refrigerants are being widely adopted as low GWP alternatives to HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbons) and HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) refrigerants for use in HVAC&R equipment. HCFC and HFC chemical stability is well understood, and their chemical breakdown reactions are well established in literature. The olefin carbon-carbon double bonds offer multiple new chemical breakdown mechanistic pathways with few studies published with understanding on the breakdown mechanisms provided for results. As the use of HFO and HCFO chemistries become increasingly widespread, it is critical to develop this same level of understanding of their reaction pathways as with previous refrigerants.
This paper will provide a review of possible mechanistic and kinetic reaction pathways and a summary of studies for common HFO & HCFO chemistries that are currently used or could be used by the HVAC&R industry. Refrigerants of interest include stereoisomers R-1336mzz(Z) and (E), R-1233zd(E), R-1224yd(Z), R-1234ze(E), and R-1234yf.
