Résumé

Most vaccines require refrigerators that can withstand high ambient temperatures and do not rely on the electrical grid for their operation. The devices should be able to store vaccines at the right temperature for extended periods of time in situations where the cooling system is not operational. An estimation of the time during which the contents of the device will be kept within the required range can be extremely useful. This time is referred to as “autonomy”. An algorithm based on thermodynamic properties was designed to monitor the energy exchanges within the refrigerator.
A mathematical model was created and embedded in an electronic system which measures the different factors acting on the application and computes the autonomy. By measuring the heat transfers and the compressor power using the COP, the factors are found.
Validation of the model was performed by using three cold chain devices in a controlled test room.
