Résumé

The increase of intermittent renewable energy sources in the overall power generation mix requires high-capacity energy storage systems built with the use of reliable and non-fast degrading technologies at an acceptable cost. A thermodynamic system is capable to do useful work in two cases. First, when it contains a high amount of energy - macroscopic or microscopic. The second case is when a system is characterized by low entropy. Given that, the term energy storage should be understood as the device or the system that is capable of transferring in time the potential to perform useful work. The paper introduces the division of popular energy stores into systems using energy-based and entropic forces. The authors propose the thermodynamic model for assessing and comparing the efficiency of different types of energy storage. Entropy-based energy storage systems do not create dependence on the availabilities of rare elements and metals.
