Résumé

Air is a cheap and safe fluid widely used for cooling electronic systems and also in aerospace and air-conditioning applications. Because of its poor heat transfer properties it is always used in combination with finned and enhanced surfaces. Recently, cellular structure materials and particularly open cells metal foams have been proposed as possible substitutes for traditional finned surfaces. This paper presents the experimental performance of an aluminium metal foam with 5 pores per inch with an average pore diameter of 5 mm in terms of maximum wall temperature and pressure losses measured during single-phase air heat transfer. The experimental results have been compared with the ones obtained for a reference traditional finned surface for electronic cooling applications in order to highlight the possible applications of these innovative heat transfer surfaces. All the data have been collected in a new experimental test rig that has been recently built at the laboratory of the Dipartimento of Fisica Tecnica of the University of Padova.
