Résumé

Cryogenic spill protection using insulation is widely used as one of the most effective risk mitigation measures to protect steel structures against brittle fractures caused by accidental cryogenic spills. However, the transient pool boiling heat transfer between the cryogenic liquid and insulation layer has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, the effect of the insulation thickness on the transient pool boiling heat transfer of a cryogenic liquid on an insulated metal was studied. The metal was coated with a low-thermal-conductivity layer with the coating thickness ranging from 0 to 1.5 mm. The surface temperature and heat flux were calculated based on the inverse heat conduction method using the temperature measured in the metal body. The effect of the insulation layer on the transition of boiling regimes was observed. It was figured out that the presence of the insulation layer shortened the duration of film boiling. If the insulation thickness is thicker than a critical value, the film boing will not occur and the liquid pool will enter transition boiling immediately. The correlation between the boiling resistance and insulation thickness was drawn. In general, the boiling resistance tended to decrease with increasing insulation thickness, except for the region around the critical thickness.
