Recommended procedures for materials selection of heat exchangers and how these procedures differ from the methods used for other pressure vessels are shown here. About materials selection, the author gives general remarks and presents: economic and manufacturing factors; fabrication methods; as well as specific components (tubing: welded vs seamless); shell and channels; tubesheets; baffles and tie rods and specific environments, (cooling water); acid and alkaline streams; fouling liquids; steam generation. He examines fabrication (mechanical design) features and problems related to vendor selection and inspection and monitoring in the field.
