Résumé

The increasing demand for lower energy consumption of refrigerating equipment forces for efficiency improvements of refrigerating compressors and other components, which have to be optimised for the specific application. A new series of compact screw compressors (CSW) for R134a is presented, which is especially designed for application in water-cooled liquid chillers and air-cooled systems for moderate climate zones. This new series reaches outstanding isentropic efficiencies both at full and part load that is considerably higher than actual levels reached with compact screw compressors. EER (full load efficiency) and ESEER (seasonal efficiency) obtainable with these screw compressors are at the highest level in the industry. The choice of the refrigerant affects the system's energy efficiency as well, which is related to indirect CO2 emissions. In addition the direct greenhouse effect due to GWP (global warming potential) of the refrigerant itself is of significant impact. For some years, R134a has been used in Europe as a refrigerant in chillers operating with screw compressors. R134a provides a relatively low GWP and, in combination with screw compressors, a remarkable increase in the systems' thermodynamic efficiency (COP) in comparison with other HFC refrigerants.
