High-temperature ammonia heat pump as an add-on to an existing chiller.

The industry has a major potential when it comes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. High-temperature heat pumps (HTHPs) can provide process heat at temperatures needed for industrial processes by lifting the temperature level of waste heat. The upgrade of already operating chiller systems with high-temperature heat pumps offers the potential to improve the efficiency of industrial processes. Within the present study, an existing ammonia (NH3) chiller was upgraded with an ammonia high-temperature heat pump. This add-on system allows to reach a supply temperature level of 90 °C, suitable for a cleaning-in-place (CIP) system in a dairy. The refrigerant leaving the chiller compressor flows either to an aircooled condenser at medium-pressure or to the compressor of the high-temperature heat pump. The highpressure refrigerant then enters the condenser where it heats up the heat sink, i.e. the water of the CIP-system. The chiller has a nominal cooling capacity of 900 kW, and the high-temperature heat pump has a nominal heating capacity of 550 kW. So far, first measurements during the commissioning phase were conducted. In addition, the dynamic characteristics of the chiller, the high-temperature heat pump, and the CIP system were investigated. The results gathered during the experimental investigations are providing information for the definition of the necessary level of detail for a dynamic simulation model of the overall system. Based on the findings a dynamic simulation model of the chiller and the add-on high-temperature heat pump will be set up.
