Using high-low capacity compressor to execute a simple novel control algorithm for direct expansion (DX) air conditioning (A/C) systems.

Résumé
A new control algorithm, named as H-L control, has been developed by authors. This new control algorithm is as simple as traditional on-off control, without requiring any formulas and calculation. And experimental results suggested that the use of H-L control would result in an improved indoor humidity level, and a higher energy-efficiency of a DX A/C system. A variable speed compressor could be used to implement this new control algorithm but with an unnecessary high cost because only two capacities are utilized by the H-L control. A new high-low capacity compressor is developed recently, which is suitable for the new control algorithm. With industrial cooperation, the possibility of using a high-low capacity compressor to implement the H-L control has been investigated. This paper firstly gives a brief introduction of the H-L control, followed by presenting a description of an experimental process of using high-low capacity compressor to implement the H-L control. Experimental results suggest the characteristics of high-low capacity compressor match the requirement of H-L control very well, although still with some rooms for improvement.
