Résumé
In the effort to reduce carbon emissions and methane emissions in the shipping industry, Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS) presents the largest, most mature and economically viable solution. Even if it is often overshadowed by alternative fuels in the media. As industry matures, an increasing variety of vessels, including CO2 carriers, oil product tankers, and soon LNG carriers, are incorporating WAPS solutions. Given that many LNG Carriers travel across large ocean with strong wind potential, and that switching to LNG as a fuel was done decades ago, wind shall become a natural solution for LNG Carriers.
For several years, TotalEnergies teams have been improving confidence levels in the fuel and emission savings expected from these technologies.
This paper will address how the overestimation of savings inherent to hindcast data was analyzed to determine the influence of weather forecast and the critical combinations of wind direction and sail technology. The long-awaited conclusion of those studies will describe the recommended methodology that provides the best compromise between accuracy in savings forecasting and CPU time. That new methodology will be applied to typical LNG trade routes.
