Le 27 janvier, le président américain Joe Biden a signé un décret demandant le consentement du Sénat américain pour ratifier l’amendement de Kigali afin de réduire progressivement les frigorigènes HFC.
On January 27, 2021, newly elected U.S. President Joe Biden took executive action to tackle the climate crisis. These announcements followed up on President Biden's pledge to take aggressive action to tackle climate change and build on the executive measures the President took on his first day in office, including joining the Paris Agreement.
Among the various measures, the President ordered the State Department to prepare a transmittal package to the Senate for the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
The order states:
“The secretary of state shall prepare, within 60 days of the date of this order, a transmittal package seeking the Senate’s advice and consent to ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, regarding the phase down of the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons.”
The Kigali Amendment has so far been ratified by 112 nations, and ratification by the USA is likely to put pressure on the remaining countries, such as China or India, to take similar action.
