Résumé

Dry coolers play an important role in many cooling applications. However, from an aesthetic point of view, dry coolers are not the crowning glory of architects' work. Therefore, dry coolers are often protected by extended facades or higher parts of the building. However, in many cases this will inhibit the air flow, which leads to a significant reduction in the cooling capacity of dry coolers. A short-circuit in the air circulation has been observed during smoke tests at the Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. This configuration is further investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Quantitative agreement was found between the in-situ measurements and the computational results of the air temperatures. It is concluded that CFD simulations can be used for the design of systems with dry coolers. Computations for the Academic Medical Centre, in Amsterdam show the added value of CFD in preventing short-circuits in the air flow around dry coolers.
