Résumé

Alternative solutions to traditional HFC plants are becoming ever-more important, with the objective of lowering the carbon footprint. CO2 seems to be an excellent and environmentally friendly solution, but only further product development can help increase component efficiency and consequently the efficiency of the complete cycle. For this reason, the company has recently built within its laboratory a new calorimetric room which can test the performance of CO2 products, both air cooled unit coolers and gas coolers. The new testing plant enabled the launch of a specific project for a CO2 fin and tube heat exchanger, with the primary aim of improving knowledge of heat exchange phenomena in evaporation, condensation and during trans-critical gas cooling. The influence of oil on internal heat exchange coefficient also enters into the scope of the research. The paper describes the testing activity, the calibration made on software that calculates product performance and potential improvements to products. In fact, if the first step of the activity concentrated mainly on gaining additional data on CO2 performance, the second step focused on developing a new generation of highly efficient CO2 heat exchangers. Many product configurations are being analyzed and tested with different coil geometries and geometric ratios; furthermore, the performance of internally grooved tubes is also being evaluated. Interesting results especially for trans-critical gas coolers are expected. New tube diameter and tube material are being measured and finally a new product generation is in the process of being realized with significant performance improvement.
