The use of adsorption heat storage for industrial heat supply with cogeneration is investigated in experiment and simulation. As an example of an industrial batch process, beer brewing is considered. The feasibility of adsorption heat storage was demonstrated in lab-scale experiments. Based on these experiments, a dynamic model is developed and successfully calibrated to measurement data. Thereby, a reliable description of the dynamic behavior of the adsorption heat storage is achieved. The model is used to study and benchmark the performance of the adsorption heat storage combined with cogeneration for batch process heat supply. As benchmark, heat storage based on a phase change material (PCM) and a peak boiler are considered. The study shows that adsorption heat storage has the potential to increase energy efficiency significantly. The key is the availability of low grade heat at times of unloading and of low grade heat demand when charging the storage.
