African liquefied natural gas ("LNG") & financing update.

Numéro : 29

Auteurs : EARDLEY-TAYLOR P.

Résumé

Per the International Gas Union (‘’IGU’’) LNG Report 2025, there is 494 Million Tonnes Per Annum (‘’MTPA’’) of globally installed LNG capacity at 31st December 2024, of which 78 MTPA is domiciled in Africa. Thus, a market share by capacity of 16%, although certain projects do not typically run at high capacity (e.g. Algerian plants, Egypt’s two plants and Nigeria LNG). As such, the IGU (2025) recorded only 38 MTPA of African LNG sales in 2024.
As is well known, the global LNG industry is in a growth cycle, with over 200 MTPA under construction (International Energy Agency (‘’IEA’’), 2025). Within this amount, however, a relatively smaller portion (around 25 MTPA) is under construction in Africa (compared to the USA or Qatar, for example), led by projects in Gabon, Nigeria and Mozambique. However, there remains the potential for additional LNG projects to be built in the likes of Mozambique, Senegal Mauritania, Nigeria, Tanzania and Namibia, with Floating LNG (‘’FLNG’’) increasing in popularity.
