Résumé

Most energy efficient chillers are designed as thermosyphon systems, which requires recirculation and an elevated liquid separator to secure refrigerant circulation. The separator increases the cost and refrigerant charge compared to a DX (direct expansion) system design.
Normally DX systems have poor efficiency, but this paper shows how much the efficiency can be improved by replacing the superheat-based control with a vapor quality-based control. This makes it possible to fulfil the EU Ecodesign requirements.
The tests are done on a high temperature process chiller (7/12 °C) according to EC 2016/2281 with 4 kg R717 and a dual control system. SEPR values are compared to the standard for the two control systems and the COP is compared during part load and it shows a 51 % improvement.
The annual energy consumption is reduced by 28 MWh equal to 3350 € or around the same magnitude as the complete chiller price after 10 years.
