Résumé

A second generation room-temperature permanent magnet active magnetic refrigerator (PM-AMR) test apparatus has been constructed at the University of Victoria. The new device is a continuation of the original rotary, variable field, concentric Halbach, fixed regenerator design (Tura, 2007). Using knowledge gained from operating the first machine, various improvements were implemented in hopes of increasing operational performance. This paper explains the areas of improvement. Particularly, the magnetic field mechanism has been redesigned to provide a continuous sinusoidal field waveform with a stationary field direction. A novel fluid control mechanism has been introduced. The regenerator aspect ratio has been adjusted to allow for greater refrigerant volumes while reducing pressure drop. The assembly of the system is modular to allow for quick replacement of material or adjustment of fluid flow parameters. The system also includes single drive motor input, mechanical torque balancing and all static sealing. Initial test results are briefly presented.
