Résumé

In temperate climates, the increasing use of radiant cooling in commercial buildings, has prompted interest in the feasibility of utilising cooling towers for the production of chilled water for these systems. Cooling towers in conjunction with radiant cooling may provide an alternative approach to conventional fan coil vapour compression chiller systems, which in temperature climates, can for certain building cooling applications be viewed as an over engineered solution. For such radiant systems to operate satisfactorily, chilled water in the range from 14 to 18°C must be produced by an evaporative heat and mass transfer process in the cooling tower. In order to achieve this effectively, it is essential that the water exiting the tower is cooled to the smallest possible approach to the wet bulb temperature, ideally to within 1 K, so as to maximise system availability. The current paper is concerned with performance assessment of a low approach, open cooling tower, which is coupled by means of a plate heat exchanger to a building radiant cooling circuit. The assessment is carried out for four European cities: Helsinki, Birmingham, Prague and Paris, which are broadly representative of the following temperate climate classification: cool & dry, cool & semi-humid, warm & dry, warm & humid, respectively. Sensitivity studies for each the four cities are carried out, using a previously reported mathematical model of the cooling tower, for a cooling season. The model is used to identify the effect of optimisation of the cooling tower water and air mass flow rates on the tower performance.
