Sensitivity analysis using CFD of air distribution in transport refrigeration containers.

Résumé

Recent developments in the transport refrigeration sector have led to the expectation of air temperature tolerances of the order of plus or minus 2 °C in refrigerated truck containers. A key issue associated with the provision of these levels of temperature control is adequate and uniform distribution of refrigerated air throughout containers. This however is particularly challenging, as cargo loading patterns often lead to air mal-distribution and in some cases airflow blockage. In the paper, a two dimensional CFD model is described that examines the effect of pallet loading patterns on airflow and air distribution in refrigerated transport containers. Parametric studies are presented that examine the sensitivity of airflow as a function of packing configurations, pallet-to-pallet air gaps, pallet to ceiling clearances and pallet blockage patterns. The study shows that airflow patterns are subject to severe mal-distribution with the majority of flow circulating in only the first quarter of a typical container. In particular, blockages due to poorly packed cargo are found to be detrimental to proper air distribution. The provision of air ducts was found to contribute significantly in providing improved air distribution throughout containers.
