Résumé

The aim of this paper is to show the impact of different heating and cooling systems on the heating and cooling cost and the CO2 emissions for military barracks located at a US Army camp in Southern Indiana. An annual simulation with different heating and cooling systems coupled with standard insulation and with high performance insulation is carried out. The annual simulation shows that the proposed two-stage heat-pump system was able to achieve a heating JAZ (Seasonal performance factor) of 2.89 and a cooling JAZ of 3.91. Furthermore, the CO2 emissions during the heating season were reduced by 18% compared to a natural gas heating system. The simulation results show that a new building with high-insulation standards reduces the annual heating demand by 89% and the peak cooling demand by 14% compared to today’s military barracks. During the hot summer months, the CO2 emissions can be reduced by 27% when using a PCM (phase change material) as a thermal storage device.
