Résumé

Nowadays, synthetic refrigerants are being phased out worldwide due to their harmful effects on the ozone layer depletion and global warming. On the other hand, natural substances are being recalled as long-term alternatives for different applications in the refrigeration industry. Moreover, cascade refrigeration systems with CO2 as working fluid in the low temperature stage and NH3 in the high temperature constitute an interesting choice for low temperature (-40/-55°C) cooling applications, such as freezing processes or the storage of frozen products. In the paper, a detailed thermodynamic analysis of a two-stage cascade refrigeration system with CO2 and NH3 as working fluids is reported. The influence of the main design parameters on COP and exergetic efficiency is obtained and discussed. Special attention is paid to the determination of the optimum temperature level to carry out the inter-stage heat transfer process. Moreover, useful maps and correlations are proposed to be used in the design and the optimization of these types of refrigeration systems.
