Résumé

The paper provides a short history of refrigeration and air conditioning, from the very first efforts to store ice from frozen rivers and lakes for hot seasons, to the first refrigerating machines and on to today's air conditioning. The paper describes the founding of the International Institute of Refrigeration, based on the unique book of 1909 written by the delegate of Serbia at the inaugurating congress. It also gives a brief review of refrigeration development, from the very first attempts of our ancestors up until the present day.
