Résumé

The transition toward carbon neutrality by 2050, reinforced by the European Union’s F-Gas regulations (Smith 2015), drives the development of efficient refrigeration and heat pump systems using natural refrigerants. This study investigates R718 (water) as a sustainable working fluid with zero ODP and GWP. Despite its benefits, R718 presents challenges such as low vapor density, high compression ratios, elevated discharge temperatures for compressors, and hydrostatic pressure issues during evaporation due to low operating pressure. A 90,000 rpm turbo-compressor was characterized using a dedicated test bench circulating water vapor, enabling validation of flow rate estimation through pressure-loss modeling and CFD simulations. This characterization supports the development of internal cooling strategies to enhance stability and reduce discharge temperature. The results show promising potential to improve compressor performance and COP, providing valuable insights for future sustainable refrigeration and heat pump systems.
