Ground-coupled horizontal CO2-loop as heat source for heat pumps: first operation results.

Résumé

Rising concern for the environmental effects of HFC-refrigerants has resulted in a need to decrease the refrigerant charge in refrigeration and heat pump systems. This issue might strengthen the position of indirect ground-coupled systems compared to direct expansion heat pump systems in the individual residential sector. The paper presents a horizontally installed ground coupled loop using carbon dioxide as secondary fluid as an alternative to conventional ground-coupled heat pumps with indirect systems using water-antifreeze mixtures. The objective of the work was to demonstrate the operational characteristics and performance of a heat pump system for tap water production installed in a single family house using a ground-coupled CO2-loop as the heat source. The results, based on measurements during the first month of operation, showed a performance factor of 3.1 for tap water production. The ongoing monitoring of the system will bring conclusions about the system performance and reliability for a longer time period.
