Briefly traces the development of plumbing materials, to the current situation where copper is the most commonly used piping material in commercial and domestic piping systems. Considers alternatives to copper in the form of thermoplastics. Presents a comparison of approved thermoplastics and treats their assembly and joining methods, pipe strength and expansion and contraction. Notes costs. Illustrates in a bar chart the penetration of plastics for hot and cold water pipes, 1997, for a range of European countries.
