Résumé
Ice slurries are well known for their use in pure water production and cold transport/storage. For more than a decade, they have been the subject of in-depth studies in different fields. In this paper, the technology was used for desalination purposes. Ice slurry consists of pure ice crystals immersed in a concentrated brine. Freshwater is obtained by melting the ice crystals while the cold energy is used for refrigeration purposes. The first step consists in freezing seawater to remove the ice and the second step in recovering heat by melting the ice. This study focuses on the kinetics of melting ice in direct contact with a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger efficiency was studied as a function of the operating parameters. The water salinity was successfully divided by 10 and the parameters with the strongest impact were the amount of ice and, to a lesser extent, the heat transfer area.
