Résumé
With the problem of global warming worsening, there is a pressing need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and within the construction sector there is potential to make significant reductions. The source of most carbon dioxide emissions in the construction sector is existing buildings, and therefore, to achieve emissions reductions, energy saving measures must be undertaken for these buildings. The beneficial effects of thermal insulation and solar-shading refurbishment are not as clear as those of facilities refurbishment, and as a result much fewer of these refurbishments have been undertaken. Clarifying the effects of thermal insulation and solar-shading refurbishment is important for the promotion of the widespread deployment of building refurbishment operations. Using computer simulations, this study aims to elucidate these effects, and thus, to promote thermal insulation and solar-shading refurbishments. The results of the simulations showed that thermal insulation and solar shading give rise to energy-saving effects that result from the reduction of the thermal load. However, when the shape, window area, or climate condition was changed for the same thermal insulation or solar-shading scheme, it was found that the effect was altered. There were cases in which the thermal load was not only reduced but also increased depending on the simulation conditions. For example, in a cold climate, improvements in the thermal insulation decreased the thermal load, but improvements in the solar shading increased it. Therefore, selection of suitable thermal insulation and solar-shading refurbishments specific to the characteristics of a building is important when undertaking and promoting energy-saving measures.
