Caractéristiques de transfert de chaleur et performance en terme de refroidissement d'un régénérateur magnétique actif.
Heat transfer characteristics and cooling performance of an active magnetic regenerator.
Auteurs : KAWANAMI T.
Résumé
The primary objective of the present study is to discuss the optimum operating conditions of a room-temperature magnetic refrigerator based on the fundamental heat transfer characteristics of an active magnetic regenerator (AMR). The AMR system basically has four sequential processes: magnetization, heat exchange fluid flow, demagnetization and fluid flow. The fundamental heat transport characteristics of each processes of the AMR cycle are investigated in detail, and both the cooling power and the total system performance are evaluated when the system is running continuously. The basic components of the target system are a magnetic circuit, a test section, a fluid blowing system, and associated instrumentation. The magnetic circuit, which consists of two opposing permanent magnets that are placed 20 mm apart and a yoke, is installed on a PC-controlled slider to change the magnetic field from 0 to 1.0 tesla with reciprocating motion. The authors adopt a packed bed containing gadolinium particles as a magnetic working substance. In addition, both distilled water and air are used as the heat transport fluid. The results revealed that the heat transfer characteristics in the packed bed are strongly affected by both the heat exchange time and flow rate of the heat transport fluid. Furthermore, the results from the AMR cycle indicate that the increase in the gradual temperature due to regeneration is clearly observed for both heat transfer fluids. Hence, it can be concluded that the AMR cycle is very effective for the room-temperature magnetic refrigerator.
