Progress in the characterization and optimization of a permanent magnet magnetic refrigerator.

Résumé

This paper presents experimental results using a permanent magnet magnetic refrigerator described at Thermag 2007. The use of gadolinium spheres (300 micrometers) rather than flakes and a method to ensure no air bubbles are trapped in the fluid flow system have resulted in significant improvements in performance. In addition, a new fluid flow system was created allowing for a lower system pressure drop and increased effectiveness in the cold heat exchanger. These modifications have increased temperature span and cooling power over all operating frequencies up to 4 Hz. The data acquisition system was upgraded to measure work input for the system and to determine COP. The peak, no-load temperature span using a total of 110 g of gadolinium has increased to 29°C, and the cooling power is over 3 times larger than in previous tests. Because of an improved refrigerant geometry, pressure drop has been halved. A COP of 1.6 was obtained for the entire system with a cooling power of 50 W and a temperature span of 2°C when operating at 1.4 Hz.
