Experimental mapping of heat pump and water-cooled condensing household tumble dryers.

Résumé

The present work compares the performance of two household tumble dryer technologies, namely heat pump and water-cooled condensing with electric heat element. Experimental tests were conducted in a climate chamber varying the test load and initial moisture content levels complying with the IEC 61121 (2012) standard. The key performance indicators were evaluated, such as programme time, energy consumption and specific moisture extraction rate (SMER). A sensitivity analysis indicated the existence of a direct relationship between the dryer performance and the load mass. Also, the results showed that the heat pump dryer, in addition to presenting a 20% faster programme time, manages to remove almost 3 times more moisture than the water-cooled condensing for the same consumed energy.
