Résumé

Using a test rig built from an off-the-shelf carbon dioxide heat pump water heater (“HPWH”), a comparison was made between the base performance and that of a HFC/CO2 blend. Performance with CO2 was measured at conditions closely resembling those indicated in product literature. The blend was then tested at matching conditions to see how the heating capacity, energy consumption and coefficient of performance (“CoP”) compare.
The blend tested has a higher critical temperature than that of pure CO2. At higher temperature applications CO2 is often perceived to require more energy consumption than HFC refrigerants. With ever increasing pressure to move from fossil fuelled heating systems to electrically powered systems, HPWH’s are becoming increasingly common throughout the developed world. Most of the current models on the European market use HFCs as the working fluid although Japan has had a significant market for CO2 systems for at least a decade.
More than ever, end users want products viewed as less harmful to the environment and it seems likely that demand for CO2 systems will increase. This paper will report the results of testing which is currently taking place with a view to showing that the CoP of standard CO2 systems can be improved.
