Résumé

The employment of low-grade thermal energy constitutes an interesting solution to save energy in the refrigeration field. In this paper, a numerical thermo-economic analysis of a waste heat driven multi-ejector compressor assisted hybrid cycle for food storage applications at medium temperature (4 °C) is carried out. This system employs a single-phase vapor ejector and utilizes waste heat from an internal combustion engine designed for cogeneration purposes. The working fluid is ammonia. The proposed plant is also equipped with a booster compressor to ensure the cooling load when the operating conditions lead to a significant drop of the ejector performance. Thus, the control logic allows the system to work as only ejector mode and hybrid mode. The first objective of the analysis is to optimize the system design, choosing the best solution between investment costs and seasonal performance. Then, a thermo-economic comparison with the reference technology (i.e. vapor compression cycles, both driven by a cogeneration system and fed by the national grid) is performed, comparing both the seasonal performance and the total costs for the whole system lifetime, by considering different scenarios in terms of electric energy and natural gas cost.
