Résumé

The master Gd(5)Si(1.8)Ge(1.8)Sn(0.4) MCE alloy with first order magnetic-crystallographic transition (FOMT) was prepared by the arc-melt method. Subsequently, the alloy was high-energy ball milled for different time. The effect of milling time on the magnetic properties and phase formation of the MCE alloy was investigated in the present work. From powder XRD results, the ball milling technique does not change the Gd5Si2Ge2-type phase but broaden the corresponding Bragg reflection which implies the smaller crystalline size of milled alloys. In addition, some non-crystalline phase is formed in each milled alloy. With the decrease of the crystalline size and magnetic domain, the hysteresis of the alloy is expected to reduce compared with that of the master FOMT alloy.
