Résumé

This paper presents the development of the slider-based free piston expander for this purpose. A double acting free piston machine is adopted as the expander, in which a slider is applied to control the expander inlet/outlet. The work recovered from the expander is used by the auxiliary compressor, which is integrated into a unit with the expander. A design model is established to determine the geometric parameters of the unit and hereby the prototype is manufactured. The prototype is validated preliminarily in the CO2 test rig, in which the p-t diagrams are recorded and the working processes of the expander are analyzed. The experimental results show that the slider-based free piston expander can work steadily in the CO2 system, which proves that this type of expander concept as well as the inlet/outlet control method is feasible. Since a hard impact occurs in the prototype, resulting in a serious vibration and potentially poor durability, further improvement work is still ongoing.
