Air conditioners are perhaps second only to cold appliances in terms of global residential appliance electricity consumption. Describes the different room air conditioner (RAC) types. Presents the results of a new European SAVE study to determine their energy efficiency and improve it. Lists estimated RAC efficiency gains with potential improved design options. Gives details of RAC energy performance programmes around the world. Gives minimum energy efficiency standards for RACs in the EU.
