Résumé
The present concern about the reduction in GHG and CO2 emissions is leading to a technological development of new alternatives to the use of fossil fuels. Among others, thermoelectric materials are an emerging and interesting technology for many applications.
Transport is a growing sector being the second contributor to these emissions in addition to its high wasted heat energy (around one third of the energy from the fuel is lost thorugh the exhaust gas system). Therefore, any improvement of the efficiency will lead to a reduction in the fuel consumption so a decrease of the emissions. In line to these reasons, the European Comission has funded the project GASTone, which aim is to improve the efficiency at a vehicle level of a powertrain by the adoption of different technologies including a thermoelectric-generator (TEG). From this project, a model in Matlab (based on experimental data)in order to estimate the influence of the cartridge arrangement on the heat transfer coefficient as well as on the drop pressure has been done and it is presented in this document. Although some studies about TEGs have been performed, most of them do not consider either the effect on the heat transfer coefficient nor the drop pressure of their arrangement. The aim of the model is to find the optimal configuration of the cartridges taking into account all the influyent variables such as their arrangement, number of them, temperatures, dimensions. Results for an example of 12 cartridgtes show that the effect of the tube arrangement on the final performance could lead to a variation on electric productions up to 50% and 20% on the back-pressure increase.
