Résumé

In the past decades, a lot of attention was given to the optimization of building envelope, because this subsystem was considered a low-tech, cost-effective way to reduce energy use for heating and cooling. However, as energy codes and construction practices improve, the use of life cycle analysis of advanced residential systems for heating, cooling and domestic hot water becomes necessary to further reduce energy use toward a net-zero energy goal. This paper presents the life cycle energy use and cost analysis of eight residential systems for space conditioning and domestic hot water production, applied to a low-energy single-family house located in Southern Quebec, Canada. Technologies proposed for the house with optimized envelope include: electric resistance baseboards, central forced air-conditioning unit, air-source heat pump, cold climate air-source heat pump, ground-source heat pump, electric water heater, flat-plate solar water collectors and desuperheater. Life cycle energy analysis includes the operation energy for heating, cooling and domestic hot water, which is evaluated using TRNSYS 16 program, and the embodied energy of mechanical systems. The paper presents the important results from this study: the systems that minimize either the life cycle cost or life cycle energy use and the relative magnitude of embodied energy into the building envelope and systems compared to the operation energy.
