Résumé

Suction line heat exchanger (SLHX) decreases temperature of the stream entering the expansion valve, allowing lower mixture quality and higher heat input from the evaporator. On the other side, cold stream is heated leading to higher specific volume of CO2 at the compressor inlet, which requires higher mechanical power. This trade-off needs to be taken into account especially in CO2 transcritical refrigeration or/and heat pump systems, usual studies assuming that SLHX has always a positive effect on the system’s performance. This work proposes a criterion to assess if SLHX leads to an increase on the overall system’s performance or not, data being presented in chart form. They are useful for analysis and design, and also for systems’ operation, as systems can include SLHX and through the adequate bypass assembly and control to consider it operating or not, depending on the particular operating conditions.
